How to make full use of your notebook and desktop core 2 duo or multicore processor Print E-mail

Do you have a core 2 duo processor or any multicore processor in your notebook or desktop. Ever wondered what can you do to fully utilize multiple processors. Does it bugg you to know that you've got multiple processors yet your computer starts to get hung up or becomes unresponsive or slow on heavy CPU usage. If you share the same frustration as me, then you gotta try this super little tool... readon...

This little utility is call Process Lasso and is available to home users for free.

It lets you do a whole bunch of things, but the main three main features which I find really great about the software is:

1. It automatically adjusts the priority of processes which consume alot of CPU resource to a lower priority. This gives you back control of the PC when a processes is hogging the CPU rather than being stuck without control over the mouse and keyboard.

2. It allows you to set default process priorities for any selected process. So that CPU hog processes start with lower priority.

3. It allows you to set default process processor affinity for any selected process. Constraint certain processes which demand alot of cpu resource to only a single CPU.

When Intel and AMD put together their multi-core cpus the Microsoft should have added the above mentioned features into the OS.... sigh... luckily we have this utility.. anyway

When you launch the application you are presented with a screen showing a graph of processor usage (red graph) and responsiveness (green graph). Whenever there is a dip in responsiveness or spike in processor usage the utility will take action against the offending process to lower its priority automatically. When this happens you will see a verticle indicator on the graph indicating that action was taken at that point in time. Ok all this might sound confusing, just run the application and it works out of the box to immediately police your misbehaving processes. The program has options to run quietly or popup dialog boxes from the system tray.

In summary this application has rescued my computer from being taken hostage by wild processes that consume all of the available processor resource. I strongly recommend you download this little utility and try it out! Its compatible with Windows XP and Vista, and comes in 32bit or 64bit flavor. Get it HERE...

Affinity
Task Manager set affinity in XP as a properties choice but in Vista that choice does not appear. I do not know how to set affinity in Vista. This utility looks to be a possible answer

Its still better than the task manager
Munka but this tool allows you to save your settings. You mean you want to set the CPU affinity every time.

Nothing special
All of this is stuff you can do in task manager (for the most part).

The only exception being the automatic lowering of CPU priority.

CPU affinity is already an option in Vista, and CPU priority can be manually set.

Anything similar for Mac OS?
Process Lasso looks interesting, there's also Process Explorer that is quite powerful to work with processes.

However I switched to Mac OS, so: does an app similar to Process Lasso exist for Mac OS?
