Hi everyone.... this will be an article is on Samba and Vista.... I've always believed in Windows and Open Source Software co-existing. Windows and Linux have been dancing together for quite sometime now.... till Vista... due to some changes in the way it authenticates NTLM... Readon...

Ok... I know all you people with Samba 3 and above, will start saying... hey.. just upgrade to Samba 3 well yeah.... if it is any normal version of linux that is updated you would probably already have Samba 3 and not face this problems. THe big issue "IS" for those of us where upgrading to Samba 3 is not an option. Like in the case of my Archos PMA400 which I happily updated to run Openpma. It now supports Samba fully but argh... yep old version of Samba..

Anyway... the work around that will help

Goto your control panel in Vista Goto Administrative tools

Image

Choose Local Security Policy

Image

Go to Local Policy security options

Image

Then select Network Security: Lan Manager Authentication Level

Image

Choose Send LM & NTLM use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated

Image

Up till here you are good to go with the NTLM problems

But you might not want to forget mapping as a drive with the account settings you created in Samba, else you might still not be able to connect tricky tricky... tsk tsk...

See piccys below for the mapping

Click the start menu then click on computer, Then choose to map drive

Image

Next don't forget to choose connect using a different user name. Enter your the account and password for use in Samba.

For being able to map Samba on my Archos I give this CoolCoolCoolCoolCool cool smilies!!!

Samba and Vista
It works. The same outcome can be achieved by changing
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\LMCo mpatibilityLevel from a 3 to a 1.
