Virtualisation seems to be the keyword these days. And the technology is so available that you can even use it at home..... and if that is not enough... its FREE... thats right FREE..... read on...

With the likes of virtualisation software like virtual pc and vmware. People are running all kinds of OS's on their PCs without the need for dual booting. On top of that you can move your virtual machine around and even make copies of your virtual machine. Without worrying about hardware compatibility. Well with all thing Free and good on this site... there happens to be some free virtualisation software. Its called virtualbox and its as nifty as it sounds.

It comes in a couple of versions closed source binary, and opensource

here are some of the features in the free closed source version:

  • Remote Display Protocol (RDP) Server

This component implements a complete RDP server on top of the virtual hardware and allows users to connect to a virtual machine remotely using any RDP compatible client.

  • USB support

VirtualBox implements a virtual USB controller and supports passing through USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 devices to virtual machines.

  • USB over RDP

This is a combination of the RDP server and USB support allowing users to make USB devices available to virtual machines running remotely.

  • Shared Folders

With the use of Shared Folders, users can share directories on their host system with guest systems.

  • iSCSI initiator

VirtualBox contains a builtin iSCSI initiator making it possible to use iSCSI targets as virtual disks without the guest requiring support for iSCSI.

Check out the screenshot... its Vista compatible

More Vista goodness and check out the virtual devices

Who said its not cross platform.... looky here Virtualbox running Ubuntu

Virtualbox also supports a snapshot mode... so you can save the state of the machine

AND YES... this honest to goodness software is once again... FREE my friends

I rate Virtualbox CoolCoolCoolCoolCool cool smilies for being Vista and Mac compatible, for being opensource friendly, stable and FREE

VirtualBox Direct3D
The latest version of VirtualBox also supports Direct3D graphics. This is something I've really been waiting for.

VirtualBox Direct3D
I use it to run Open Solaris on MacOS. Run's way better than my Vista on Parallels installation on the same machine with lower resources overhead (and it was free!)

Thanks for sharing your thoughts
Hi Kaji,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Virtual box is indeed a fine piece of software. And so are the many other GPL work out there. Indeed my hats off to the people who have done all the work. MS has made a move to share their Virtual PC software. I was hoping that Vmware would follow suit too. Vmware has all the nifty bells and whistles and snapshot too.. too bad they are Commercial.... sigh....

free as in freedom
While Microsoft's Virtual PC is free is is only available on their Windows platform. Virtual Box has a GPL'ed version that has been ported to a number of platforms. I do not want to argue the virtues of an open source software, however the ability to create snapshots of a Windows OS lends to a far more stable system then running it live as the host.
