Have you ever found it such a pain to tell someone how to do something over the phone. Or its you mum, dad or grandma who wants to do something in the computer but just can't seem to understand what you are talking about. Or maybe you want to create your own training video. Why take a screen shot to show them when you can show them exactly with a video. Well life is pretty neat when you have not 1 but I will show you 2 FREE applications that can help you do a screen recording. Read on...

 WINK

A screen recording is quick and easy way to tell people how to do something on the computer... the first application I want to talk about is Wink... First of all it is FREE... You can do a screen recording of part of a screen, whole screen or just a window. After recording the program presents you with thumbnails. You can edit the screen recording, and also you can annotate and place comments. All this is really excellent. The final recording can be generated as a swf file or a standalone exe. My only gripe about the application is that the generated exe file does not work on Windows Vista. I guess it might be some thing to do with the version of shockwave player they might be using. But at least the generated .swf and .htm files work properly. But one other problem is that the program commits suicide when you generate large demos.

Here are some screenshots of the options available for recording

This is the main working area where you can modify and annotate your demo recording

Here are some of the features of Wink from the Wink website:

  • Freeware: Distributed as freeware for business or personal use. However if you want to redistribute Wink, you need to get permission from the author.
  • Cross-Platform: Available for all flavours of Windows and various versions of Linux (x86 only).
  • Audio: Record voice as you create the tutorial for explaining better.
  • Input formats: Capture screenshots from your PC, or use images in BMP/JPG/PNG/TIFF/GIF formats.
  • Output formats: Macromedia Flash, Standalone EXE, PDF, PostScript, HTML or any of the above image formats. Use Flash/html for the web, EXE for distributing to PC users and PDF for printable manuals.
  • Multilingual support: Works in English, French, German, Italian, Danish, Spanish, Serbian, Japanese, Brazilian Portuguese and Simplified/Traditional Chinese.
  • Smart Capture Tools: Capture screenshots automatically as you use your PC, based on mouse and keyboard input (great time saver and generates professional captures).
  • Performance/Quality: Creates highly compressed Flash presentations (few kbs to few hundreds of kbs, much smaller than competing commercial products) ideal for using on the web.

  • Tools:
    • Navigation buttons to move to next/previous/random frames in the presentation, you can use custom bitmaps for these buttons (full transparency/alpha channel support).
    • Callouts and shapes for displaying text explanations. The inbuilt Callout Editor is used to create custom shaped callouts as you want.
    • Intuitive drag-n-drop editing of the frame, callout, cursor, navigation buttons and the title elements.
    • Advanced features like templates, cursor editing, palettes, background images, control bars & preloaders for the flash output etc.
    • Completely PC and Web ready with exports to PDF, HTML, SWF and EXE formats.
    • Innovative compression techniques applied to reduce filesize of output Flash file. Generated flash file plays in Flash players from version 3 and above, giving you widest array of target audience.
    • Uncompressed output to allow you import the output of Wink into other Flash editors.

This software is quite well written.  It works well in Vista as well so I give it CoolCoolCoolCool

less 1 cool smiley for the minor bugs.

DOWNLOAD WINK FROM HERE!!

CAMSTUDIO

The other free application I wanna talk about is camstudio. Its free as well and the interface is easy to use. It is able to generate screen recordings as avi and swf files. But support in Vista is horrible. If you are using Windows XP you might wanna consider this application if you want a simpler interface. Otherwise I suggest going with Wink.

This software is well written and has an easy to use interface but because of the poor Vista support I give it CoolCoolCool  cool smilies.
