Read on... Are you tired of sluggish downloads and waiting several minutes until a website fully loads? Did you know that your Internet Service Provider (ISP) limits your internet download speed, and your modem is capable of lots more? There are several ways of increasing the speed of your internet connection. You can use applications or proxies.
Proxies
What is a proxy server? A proxy server is a remote computer (or network of computers) which acts like your ISP. You send all your requests to the proxy and the proxy will carry them out. This way your ISP is left out of the internet communication, thus cannot limit your internet speed. Based on the service provided by the proxy, there are three types of proxies:
To boost your download speed, use transparent proxies. Anonymous proxies are used for hiding your IP address.
Based on the communication, proxies can be listed into:
You’ll find a really good proxy list that is updated every day on www.samair.ru.
To configure your internet browser to route traffic trough proxies (on Firefox 2): 1. In the Tools menu, select Options. 2. In the Advanced section, choose the Network tab and push the Settings button. 3. Check the Manual proxy configuration checkbox, write the proxy address in the HTTP proxy field, and the port of the proxy in the Port field. You can also add SSL, FTP, Gopher or SOCKS proxies in this window. 4. Press OK to save your settings.
The configuration for other browsers is similar to this. Keep in mind, that different applications use different proxy types. For example, BitComet uses SOCKS proxies. Here are the steps to configure BitComet to use proxies: 1. In the Options menu, select Preferences. 2. Select Connection->Proxies, choose the type of the proxy you will be using (SOCKS4, SOCKS5), write the address and port and press OK.
Boost the Speed with Applications
Basically, there are two types of apps that can help you in this section: · Apps that manipulate your registry and Windows settings to speed up your PC – depending on your system they can either work or don’t. The bummer about these programs is that the entirely free ones have a lot of issues (Mini Speed 3.5). Beware of the “FREE” solutions offered in this category, as many of them contain ADDWARE, so make sure you read the user reviews before downloading and installing any of them. · Applications that boost the download speed (FlashGet 1.8, Free Download Manager 2.1). These applications are a lot safer, because they don’t mess with your Windows settings and registry keys.
If you don’t want any more slow downloads, pick your choice and start boosting your download speed!
